Get Your Body Beach Ready - Dr. Youn on the CBS Early Show

Here is a recent segment I did on the CBS Early Show where I demonstrated four interesting ways to get your body ready for bathing suit season. Two of these are take-home devices that really do seem to work! You can order the Wellbox and Silk'N online. And no, I do not get any payment from either of these companies. (although it would be nice if I did...)

Thanks to the CBS Early Show for inviting me to be on the program once again!

Zeltiq - Noninvasive Fat Loss - Too Good To Be True? No...

One of the hottest things in plastic surgery today, and what I consider the Holy Grail of plastic surgery, is Noninvasive Fat Loss. One of the latest to claim this is Zeltiq. This is a device which is FDA approved in the U.S. for other purposes, but many physicians are using it 'off-label' to remove fat without needles or surgery. How does it work?

Zeltiq chills the surface temperature of the skin, causing the fat below it to become irreversibly damaged. The body's natural clearing mechanisms then get rid of the fat over time, creating actual inch loss. According to an introductory study:

- Subjects were comfortable during the procedure and did not require pain medication.
- Cryolipolysis results in a visible contour change in a majority of subjects.
- 100% of a subset of ultrasound-evaluated subjects demonstrated a measurable reduction; the average for the group was 22.4% fat layer reduction 4 months post-procedure.
- Noticeable cosmetic efficacy was more consistently observed in properly selected subjects.
- 27 of 28 (96%) properly selected subjects (discrete fat bulges) had discernable efficacy.

Do I think this works?
Actually, yes. We've seen in certain types of reconstructive surgery (such as pressure sores) that the skin is much more resistant to damage than the underlying fat. Therefore, it makes sense that the chilling can destroy the fat but leave the skin viable. The before and after photos I've seen, however, have not been very impressive. 22.4% fat loss is pretty modest compared to what can be achieved with liposuction. For now, I consider it a modality with promise but limited effectiveness. It may be helpful for people who are not good candidates for liposuction.

For more on Zeltiq, click here for their website.

Kim Kardashian Admits to Botox? Ho hum...

Kim Kardashian has admitted to Botox and... nothing else. In a recent interview she has denied having her nose or breasts operated on. Her mom Kris also denied having a rhinoplasty, which, from what I remember about how she looks, seems untruthful to me.

Did any of you see Kim getting Velashape on her reality show to smooth her cellulite? Yes, she does have cellulite like 90% of women (and a few guys... check out Howard Stern's Fartman photos).

"In Stitches" - Dr. Youn's Memoir Hitting Shelves in April 2011!

I'd like to announce that I've signed a contract with Gallery Books (A Division of Simon & Schuster) to write my medical school memoir, In Stitches. From Publisher's Weekly:

Kara Cesare at Gallery Books took world rights, at auction, to Dr. Anthony Youn's memoir, In Stitches. Youn, currently a world-renowned plastic surgeon, is writing with Alan Eisenstock and recounts his experiences growing up the sole Korean-American in a small Michigan town. Agent Wendy Sherman brokered the deal, and Gallery is planning a summer 2011 publication.

I'm really excited about my book coming out, as it's been over five years in the making. Thanks to Kara Cesare, Wendy Sherman, and Alan Eisenstock for making this dream come true. It's a funny, yet touching coming-of-age story of how a young Asian-American kid with big glasses and a huge jaw became a nationally-recognized plastic surgeon. (There's much more to the story, but this is all I can reveal right now)

You'll all be hearing more about this over the coming months!

Nicole Kidman Has New Breast Implants?

Two questions today:
1. Q: Has Nicole Kidman undergone a breast augmentation?
A: It appears that way. These photos from NYDailyNews.com reveal what appears to be new breast implants. It would be very unusual for a woman as thin as she is to have breasts as full and round as those are. I haven't seen her with obvious implants before, so she may be recently postop.
2. Q: Why do they look so round? Is it the plastic surgeon's fault?
A: Maybe. It can be quite difficult, even with today's silicone gel implants, to create a really natural look in someone who has so little body fat, especially after she's had children and the breast tissue has thinned. Now, a plastic surgeon can make matters worse (less natural-looking) by placing an implant that is overly round or doesn't fit the person's dimensions. Excess scar tissue (capsular contracture) can make the breasts look rounder and less natural, too.
Nicole has denied having plastic surgery in the past. I wonder if her denials will continue?

Sharon Stone and Lip Injections

Sharon Stone has revealed that she's had her lips augmented by a plastic surgeon in the past...and didn't like it. According to CNN.com:

“Nobody loves me. I’m 103. My life would be better if I had better lips,” she said in the interview. She had something - the name of which she can’t quite remember - pumped into her bottom lip.
How did she feel about it?
Well to be frank, like asking, “What the hell?" Stone added that her lips became so plump they didn't match, and even lip gloss wouldn’t stay on. She said she looked “like a trout,” and promised never to get plastic surgery again.

I wonder if she decided this before or after having a breast augmentation? Click here for my previous post showing a photo which may reveal her breast implants.

It's easy for celebs to reveal they've had minor cosmetic injections and didn't like them. What about admitting they've had major surgery and liked the results?

How Today's Stars Will Age - My New MSNBC Slideshow

Do you want to know how today's stars will age? Have you tried to figure out which parts of the face age certain stars or keep them looking young? Are you wondering why my recent blog posts have stunk?

It's because I've been busy writing my new celebrity slideshow on MSNBC.com. It's called "How Today's Stars Will Age." You can find it here. Since obtaining my book deal (more on this later), I'm feeling more and more comfortable letting my personality come out in my writing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did writing it. (My favorite one is the Britney Spears write-up)

Thanks to MSNBC.com and Linda Dahlstrom

Danielle DeLorenzo of Survivor

I'm currently addicted to two prime time TV shows: LOST and Survivor. As a plastic surgeon, one thing that is always interesting on Survivor is figuring out which of the women have breast implants. It's usually pretty obvious. As they starve and get thinner and thinner, their breasts stay big and round. One good example is Danielle DeLorenzo, a "Villian" who played a prominent role this season. To me, her breast implants were obvious, and even exhibited some visible rippling. If I had to guess:

34 D
Mentor Smooth Round Saline, 375 cc implants filled to 425 cc.

Just a guess. I was rooting for Parvati to win.

Will Cate Blanchett's Husband Divorce Her If She Gets Plastic Surgery?

According to opposingviews.com, Cate Blanchett has stated that her husband will divorce her if she gets plastic surgery:

“I haven’t had anything done, but who knows,” she said. “Andrew said he’d divorce me if I did anything. When you’ve had children, your body changes; there’s history to it… I think it’s important not to eradicate it...I look at someone’s face and I see the work before I see the person. I personally don’t think people look better when they do it; they just look different.”

It's easy for a person to say this when she's 5'8" and weighs a buck ten. I wonder if she'd feel the same if she developed a potbelly and breasts that drooped to her waist after having children? And does anybody believe her husband would truly divorce her if she had plastic surgery? If so, then he's a piece of s---!

Heidi Montag - Wants Bigger Implants? BDD? And Crying Botox Face!

Sorry, but another post on annoying Heidi Montag. Star Magazine is reporting that Heidi is now regretting the surgery she had.

In this week's issue of Star, we reveal Heidi's regrets about getting DDD breast implants and having her chin shaved down. "And she's telling friends, 'I made a mistake!'," a family
friend tells Star. Swollen and wracked with pain, Heidi's dream body feels more like a prison. "She cries every night," a source says. "She's a wreck over what she's done to herself."

This is in stark contrast to other reports stating that she was so upset that Ryan Seacrest said her breasts weren't that big that she now plans to go to Europe to make them bigger! Is it actually against the law for her to have bigger implants?

No. It's not against the law in the U.S. for her to have larger implants, contrary to published reports. The two major breast implant companies make implants up to 800 cc, and her implants are reportedly 700 cc. Therefore, if she wants her breasts to be larger she has three options: (1) Convince one of the implant companies to custom-make one for her, (2) Go to another country where their manufacturer may make an implant larger than 800 cc, or (3) Convince some whacko surgeon to stack her implants. This is when the surgeon places more than one implant into each breast. Instead of doing any of those three, I would recommend that she dump that tool Spencer and consult a psychiatrist.

I believe Heidi has Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Check out this article on AOL's Popeater for my comments and the opinions of several psychiatrists. Click here.

Finally, if you've ever wondered what someone who's had her face over-Botoxed looks like when she's crying, the photo is it!

Use it or lose it: study shows consistant BOTOX use can allow longer results

Confirming what many Plastic Surgeons have noticed, a study just published suggests that patients who maintain their treatments with BOTOX for several years need fewer treatments to maintain their results.

On average, someone receiving treatment of their forehead or glabella (area between the eyebrow) requires retreatment every 3-4 months. The new study from the OHSU School of Medicine in Portland,OR shows that after 2 years of consistent treatments, the interval between treatment could be extended to 6 months with no difference in results.

Has Megan Fox Had Her Lips Plumped?

These photos from starmagazine.com appear to show that Megan Fox has "Transformed" her lips into two sausages! She's likely had them injected within a few hours to days before the photo to the right was taken. While they look puffy now, they should settle down nicely... unless she used something insane like liquid silicone. Then she's screwed.

Dr. Sanjiv Kayastha - Albany Plastic Surgeon

Since I have readers from every state (and even many other countries), every so often I try to recommend a plastic surgeon from another region whom I can vouch for. For those of you in the Albany, New York area, I give my highest recommendation to Dr. Sanjiv Kayastha. I did most of my residency training with Dr. Kayastha, and if I can describe him in one word it would be integrity. He is a thorough, meticulous, honest, and talented plastic surgeon who performs the entire spectrum of plastic surgery, including hand surgery, cosmetic surgery, and reconstructive surgery. He may not be me (ha ha), but he is a damn fine surgeon.

Visit his website at www.kplasticsurgery.com.
